Jim Johnson (left) discusses feed efficiency with test station manager Jerry Yates (right)

Test weights and information

Our goal is to offer our customers the most comprehensive information available on our sale cattle. You’ll get all the raw performance data such as birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight, scrotal, ultrasound ribeye area, back fat and marbling. Every animal will be genomic tested and have genomic enhanced EPD’s. Finally all animals will be performance tested on Grow Safe and all feed efficiency information will also be provided as well as Feed Efficiency EPDs.

All bulls and heifers are on test at the WVU Reymann Memorial Farm in Wardensville WV or better known as the Wardensville WV Bull Test Station.

Feed Efficiency and Grow Safe

Everyone knows the largest expense in a beef cattle operation is feed cost. Additionally, there are tons of articles and papers highlighting the importance of feed efficiency in beef cattle. We at JMAR Genetics are strong believers in the “if you don’t measure it, you can’t change it” philosophy. Using the poultry industry as an example. Since measuring feed efficiency they went from 4.5 lbs of feed to get a pound of gain to 1.92 lbs of feed per pound of gain. While more than doubling market weight and cutting the age at market by more than half. We aren’t suggesting we single trait select for feed efficiency, but we do want to select for cattle that will do everything else we ask them to do and just eat less doing it.
